“The Poarch Band of Creek Indians: From Roots to Renewal”
Mobile, AL – The ӰӴý Marx Library is pleased to present a
new art exhibit entitled, “The Poarch Band of Creek Indians: From Roots to Renewal,”
which will be on display from October 1 through November 30, 2017. The Poarch Band
of Creek Indians, after many trials and tribulations, have created a renewal of their
traditions and the tribe stands as testament to the value of hard work, education,
persistence, and entrepreneurship. As part of the Alabama Bicentennial Celebration
theme of “place,” this exhibit examines the roots of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians
from the first populating of the continent to formation of the Creek Nation, and from
wars with the United States to the formation of a place called Poarch. Geography
and landscape shape who we are and this is evident in the people who are members of
the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. Despite humble beginnings and discrimination, including
denial of access to education, the people of Poarch stood up for what is right, and
through their own efforts, have established a strong and significant economic reach
and impact today.
The exhibit is being shown in the Mary Elizabeth and Charles Bernard Rodning Gallery of Art on the third floor of the Marx Library. The exhibition is free and open to the public during regular Library hours. We hope you will come out and learn more about the only federally recognized Native American tribe in Alabama.
